The benefits of drinking tap water

Given that your municipal water has been determined to be safe, there are some real benefits to be gained from using drinking water that comes directly from the tap in your home.

Health benefits

You may be surprised to learn that tap water not only often meets or exceeds the quality of bottled water, but also contains minerals that are vital to our health. For example, a 2013 study found that a quart of tap water contains about 1% of your daily requirement of copper, calcium, magnesium and sodium.

Economic benefits

Constantly buying bottled water can become a drain, not only on your time and energy, but also on your wallet. According to the FDA's Recommended Daily Intake, a minimum of 8 cups per day is equivalent to four 16-ounce bottles per day. By this reasoning, a 24-bottle case will last a person 6 days and the average cost of a case is between $10 and $20. That's an additional $40 to $60 per month you'd spend on bottled water that you could save with tap water!

Environmental benefits

Aside from the health and economic benefits, one of the most serious burdens of bottled water may be its negative impact on the environment. The United States has been found to be the largest producer of plastic bottle waste - a frightening statistic that could be alleviated by simply drinking the tap water that is freely available in your own home.

Alternatives to tap water

In some cases it may be reasonable for you to seek alternatives to water from your direct drinking tap. Perhaps your local health authority has advised you that your home relies on well water of a quality you are unsure of, or you belong to a vulnerable group and just don't want to take the risk. Whatever your situation, there are a number of alternatives to consider to ensure the safety of your water.

Water purifiers

If you are concerned that the quality of your tap water does not meet water safety standards or suspect that it is at risk of contamination, fortunately there is a convenient, affordable and environmentally friendly solution.

There are many types of domestic water filters to choose from, with some systems connected directly to your sink and others storing your filtered water in the form of a tank with a water filter.

Bottled water

While bottled water is not ideal for the environment or your wallet in the long run, it can certainly be a quick and easy temporary solution when you're in a pinch. In situations such as travelling to areas where the water may be contaminated, bottled water is likely to be your best option.

However, as a long-term solution, bottled water can be expensive for both the environment and your wallet. It should also be noted, however, that bottled water manufacturers have the same drinking water standards as tap water (sometimes even more lenient) and the source is usually the same water source.
